GLEN IRIS ROAD
Located at the rear of the site, shared with a second dwelling, a single storey two bedroom unit built in the early 90s. Surrounded by tall gum trees and open space, the 230 square meter site, with easements to the North and East of the site, encompasses the best Glen Iris has to offer. The most prominent aspect of this site is the neighbouring Ferndale park - a large parkland with play grounds and a sporting oval, which the site overlooks.
An extensive renovation and second storey addition to the building turns the small unit into a house, with open plan living space and an additional bedroom, taking advantage of the sites orientation and outlook - previously ignored. As the building has previously undergone renovations, it was required that these spaces remained untouched, a tricky task, that involved a calculated approach - the existing roof was entirely removed.
Overlooking and overshadowing were determining factors, ensuring the building did not compromising the amenity of its neighbours, utilising angled walls and cleverly pitched rooves. Large windows and doors provide light and cross-ventilation, with timber screens shading and privatising the public interface.
Much of the masonry remained in place, while a portion of it was to be removed and re-used elsewhere in the project. New walls are wrapped in cor-ten steel and timber cladding and the balcony screened with timber battens, which reference the adjacent gums and their colours, creating a bold, private house.
